Idaho Empowering Parents
Idaho

Launched in Idaho to empower families' role in their children's education, the Empowering Parents Grant provides financial assistance for education-related expenses. Initially backed by federal COVID-19 relief funds, this ongoing program now receives $30 million annually from the state. Open to families with K-12 students residing in Idaho, the grant prioritizes households earning $60,000 or less per year, though it expands to $75,000 after an initial funding round.

Eligible families receive up to $1,000 per child, maxing out at $3,000 per family, which can be spent over a 24-month period. Funds are accessed through an online portal where approved vendors offer education-related goods and services like computers, internet access, learning materials, tutoring, and educational therapies. Despite some initial hiccups with ineligible purchases and marketplace vendor concerns, a recent audit found mostly positive outcomes for the program. Families interested in applying can do so through a rolling application process until funds are exhausted.

This initiative strives to give parents direct control over their children's educational resources, hoping to bridge gaps and support learning recovery, particularly for those impacted by the pandemic. This flexibility allows schools to tailor their response to their specific needs.

While the overall goal of EANS is to ensure the continued operation of non-public schools, its impact extends far beyond. By supporting these schools, the program helps maintain educational opportunities for countless students and preserves the diversity of the educational landscape in Minnesota. South Carolina Department of Education EANS
South Carolina

In South Carolina, EANS stands for Emergency Assistance to Non-Public Schools and it's a two-part program funded by federal grants to help private K-12 schools cope with the challenges brought on by COVID-19. There are actually two versions of the program, each with its own funding and requirements:

CRRSA EANS: This part comes from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, and South Carolina received nearly $40 million to distribute to eligible schools. The funds can be used for a variety of things like sanitizing supplies, PPE, technology for remote learning, and even professional development to help teachers adapt to new methods. To be eligible, schools must be non-profit, established before March 2020, and accredited. Application deadlines for CRRSA EANS have likely passed, but you can check the South Carolina Department of Education website for updates on any remaining funds.

ARP EANS: This section is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and South Carolina was again awarded around $40 million for eligible schools. The eligibility criteria for ARP EANS are slightly different, with a lower threshold of 20% low-income enrollment. Eligible schools can use the funds for similar purposes as CRRSA EANS, but there's an emphasis on supporting students with greater needs. Applications for ARP EANS remain open, though deadlines may approach soon, so head to the South Carolina Department of Education website or contact them directly for more information and instructions.

Through this program, eligible families receive a one-time $1,500 grant accessed through an online account.

These funds are meant to supplement the special education services a child already receives at school, not replace them. Think of it as an extra boost to support their educational progress. Utah Children First Education Fund
Utah

The Children First Education Fund (CFEF) is a Utah non-profit established in 2020 to offer educational choices for students with disabilities. They function as a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO), managing the Utah Special Needs Opportunity Scholarship program. This program provides scholarships for K-12 special needs students to attend private schools or homeschool. Funding comes from donations with a 100% Utah state income tax credit for donors. CFEF believes this program creates a win-win situation. Students with disabilities can access better suited learning environments. Parents gain more control over their child's education. Donors receive tax benefits while supporting a cause they care about. Private schools see increased enrollment, and public schools may even experience cost savings due to potentially lower special needs enrollment (according to CFEF).

It functions as an Education Savings Account (ESA) providing funds for K-12 students. Any Utah resident enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade is eligible to apply. While priority is given to students from lower-income families and those who previously participated in the program, all Utah students are welcome to apply. Scholarship awards can reach up to $8,000 per student. The program is administered by ACE Scholarships, a non-profit organization.

Parent Testimonials

Elephant Learning has helped over a hundred thousand students and parents are happy to share success.

Just have to shout out this girl! Since January we have been working on math since January. She has struggled for years with confidence in this area and now it is her favorite subject. She has gone from a 8.7 to 11.5 year old level on Elephant Learning. Her actual age is 11.3 so now she is above what she should know at her age. So proud of this girl! 3 times a week (sometimes more because she wants to) for 15 minutes per day. They recommend 10 but she wanted 15. They say you can learn a year of math in 3 months and we are proof that yes you can! I get no kickbacks or anything. I am not affiliated with Elephant Learning BUT I know it is working for Riley so wanted to share! We were so frustrated and needed something and this was the perfect fit for us. It may be for you too!

For anyone wondering, we used this program, and it outperformed its promise! Our experience: Our son struggled with math and as a 12-year- old, tested at a 95-year-old level of understanding. After using elephant math, it filled in difficult gaps, created a language of understanding, and in 6 months of use, he grew 3.5 years in understanding concepts, ending his time of use at a 13-year-old's level. And he has not forgotten what he learned. I would recommend this program to anyone thinking of trying it. All I can say is it worked for us. Also, I do not work for Elephant Math, I have never worked for them, and no one asked me to share my opinion. Just in case anyone wonders. This is a freely offered statement because we had such a good experience!

Yudith Iturbide Edralin recommends Elephant Learning. Elephant Learning is a great app. My daughter did not like to do math. She would give me a hard time and would cry most of the time. Since we started this program she now has a fantastic attitude. She is more confident to the point she will say mom I got this. I am truly grateful to Dr. Aditya Ngrath and the staff. When ever I need help or have questions, everyone is quick to respond. I have recommended this app to all my friends and family.

Yvonne Lozoya: The support team for this app are great. I didn't budget correctly last month and didn't have money in my account to pay for the subscription. They contacted me, I explained the situation, and they extended my sons profile he could still access the app until my next payday. My son is in kinder and enjoys using the app. I know some people complain about the robotic nature ofthe voices but my son actually loves them and how they call him by name. His confidence is improving because he sees his progress age going up. Starting Elephant Age: 3.6. Current Elephant Age: 7.4.

Wilhelmina Beckman: I have 6 kids, this has helped all of them. After we used the program for 6 months, my son who had an IEP for math had enough confidence to request to be reevaluated. Through his testing he was able to demonstrate that his math understanding and skills have improved so much that he no longer needs any IEP services, and he is even above grade level in some areas!!

Whitney Freeman recommends Elephant Learning: We absolutely LOVE your program/app!!! My boy's have gone up 2 grade levels since starting in a few short months. My oldest who has a learning disability in Mah is ACTUALLY getting and IMPROVING with it. Both my boys actually like it compared to their other homeschool curriculum we us. Thank-you, a once frustrated mom :)
