Nearly half of first and second graders already report having mathematics anxiety, along with 50% of all Americans. Math Anxiety is a real problem for students that can block a student's mindset for learning math and cause avoidance, low achievement and fear that can last throughout their lives. It can manifest as early as kindergarten and nearly half of elementary school children experience it.
With this full day session, Dr. Aditya Nagrath Ph.D. will share his research and how you can master your own math anxiety as well as learn how to identify the symptoms and learn practical strategies to help your students overcome it.
In this full day session, teachers will learn:
- The Belief Structure -- The belief structure and psychology behind mathematics anxiety. We use the data to walk the room through their mathematical journey from the perspective of the student to create empathy.
- The Basketball Analogy -- We introduce an analogy between basketball and mathematics that allow for teachers to devise coaching strategies on the fly.
- Overarching Strategies -- The overarching strategies for working with students exhibiting mathematics anxiety.
- Deconstructing The Drama Triangle -- How to spot and disassemble drama triangle.
- Tactics For Working With Students -- Strategies to use in the moment to help students progress.
The session will include collaborative discussions, hands-on activities, brain/movement breaks, and independent time.
